To Participate:

The session will be held in Building 7, Room D for those on site.

To Participate from a distance via ACPRO:

About the facilitator:  Dr. McClain received Excelsior College’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 2013 for his work with students in the School of Health Sciences.  Gary McClain has served on Excelsior’s faculty since 2010 and has developed and taught the College’s Health and Wellness course. He has also been the instructor of Sociology of Health and Wellness; Health Care Issues in Culturally Diverse Populations; Psychosocial Impacts of Chronic Illness on Person and Environment; and Introduction to Health Care Delivery Systems.

In addition to his coursework, he has also contributed an online article, Dealing with Loss, Depression or Grief During the Holidays to the College’s online newsroom, Excelsior Life; and facilitated a webinar in 2011 for the School of Health Sciences on Managing Your Stress.

Gary is also the founder of the website Justgotdiagnosed.com, a website for individuals recently diagnosed with chronic and catastrophic medical conditions, their caregivers, and loved ones. Presentation Plan:
Games have long proven remarkably successful in engaging players from early years to adulthood in extended learning environments for long durations far exceeding a typical college semester. Over the last decade educational researchers like James Paul Gee, Arizona State, and Kurt Squire, University of Wisconsin, have convincingly demonstrated how the design of commercial games can be transferred and adapted to educational learning environments that motivate otherwise reluctant students to persist in a course and achieve success. This session will briefly explain the psychological theory behind game motivation and demonstrate how that theory is being applied in projects sponsored by Excelsior’s new Center for Game and Simulation-Based Learning.

Apr 28 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Photo of Dr. Gerol PetruzellaIn 2012, Dr. Gerol Petruzella, Coordinator of Academic Technologies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, redeveloped an existing freshman philosophy course into a complete semester-long immersive role-playing game, Dungeons & Discourse.
