Presentation Description: Participants will explore how games and “game strategies” serve as optimal 21st century tools for motivating student learning, increasing student engagement, and improving student retention.
Presentation Plan:
Games have long proven remarkably successful in engaging players from early years to adulthood in extended learning environments for long durations far exceeding a typical college semester. Over the last decade educational researchers like James Paul Gee, Arizona State, and Kurt Squire, University of Wisconsin, have convincingly demonstrated how the design of commercial games can be transferred and adapted to educational learning environments that motivate otherwise reluctant students to persist in a course and achieve success. This session will briefly explain the psychological theory behind game motivation and demonstrate how that theory is being applied in projects sponsored by Excelsior’s new Center for Game and Simulation-Based Learning.

Dungeons and Discourse: Models and Practices for Gamifying Course Design
Apr 28 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Dungeons and Discourse: Models and Practices for Gamifying Course Design @ Excelsior College/Online | Albany | New York | United States

Photo of Dr. Gerol Petruzella

WATCH WEBINAR

In 2012, Dr. Gerol Petruzella, Coordinator of Academic Technologies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, redeveloped an existing freshman philosophy course into a complete semester-long immersive role-playing game, Dungeons & Discourse.

Although offered as a fact-to-face course at a small liberal arts college, the course is in fact natively hybrid, with most course activities and frameworks offered online, in a robustly integrated game environment. The course has run twice since its development and already been awarded grants from NEA/Microsoft and the Awesome Foundation.

This presentation will show how game theory and principles inform the design and implementation of an engaging blended learning, primarily online undergraduate course.

April 28, 2014, 11 am – 12 pm eastern.

Webinar: Cybersecurity Threats in Healthcare @ Online

REGISTER

Cybersecurity in HealthcareAs the healthcare industry has moved from paper-based records to more digital information transferred electronically, the risk of unauthorized disclosure of protected health information has increased. The controls and safeguards necessary to protect this type of information have not evolved as rapidly in healthcare to keep pace. Furthermore, healthcare has lagged behind other industries in advancing information protection; compared to banking, retail, industrial control, and energy, for example. However, some of the reasons for this are valid, as the best cybersecurity practices in other industries can have patient safety and patient care impacts when implemented in healthcare with a lack of regard for clinical practices and operational concerns

In addition, healthcare organizations use special computing platforms, called medical devices that may require all of the same types of information security controls and safeguards as regular office automation. But since these medical devices are externally regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they cannot be managed like any regular office automation.

Healthcare cybersecurity professionals must be savvy to compensating controls and alternative measures to mitigate cybersecurity risk when it comes to managing the varied inventory of networked computers within the healthcare organization.

Join us for this webinar to better understand these complex issues and some possible methods for addressing them; to include information risk assessment, continuous monitoring, and workforce competency.

Faculty:

The webinar will be facilitated by Sean Murphy who is currently a Vice President at Leidos (formerly SAIC) Health Solutions Group and serves as the organization’s Health Information Privacy and Security Officer. He is a healthcare information security expert, with almost 20 years of experience in the field serving at all levels of healthcare from the hospital to an international integrated delivery system.

This webinar qualifies for 1 CPE credit from IAPP.
